What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged or discolored tooth. It is cemented in your mouth and designed to match the color and shape of your other teeth.
Dental crowns can restore a chipped or broken tooth. This option is ideal for patients with a severely damaged tooth that doesn’t have enough room to hold a filling. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect a weak tooth from breaking, or restore a tooth that’s already broken. They can even cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped.
Benefits of dental crowns
Crowns are made from extremely durable material, making them last for many years. They are able to:
- Support a damaged or decayed tooth
- Protect a tooth from further damage
- Protect a tooth after a root canal procedure
- Hold a cracked or broken tooth together
- Cover a dental implant
- Improve the appearance of a discolored tooth
Dental crown procedure
During your consultation, we will perform a thorough examination of your mouth to ensure that dental crowns are the right solution. Typically, local anesthesia is administered to the area so that you remain comfortable during treatment.
Your tooth is filed down to make room for the crown. An impression will be taken of your tooth to place a temporary crown, which you will wear until your final crown is created. At a later date, you will return to our office and receive your permanent crown. We will provide you with instructions about how to properly care for your crown and maintain proper oral hygiene.
