Dental bridges in
Las Vegas, NV

Space between teeth? Bridge the gap!

A dental bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap. These anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth and support a false tooth, or pontic, that bridges the gap between teeth. False or artificial teeth are made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. A dental bridge can be supported by your natural teeth or a dental implant.

When you are missing a tooth or have a gap in your smile, you may experience difficulty speaking or chewing. A dental bridge is an alternative to receiving a dental implant and can restore your ability to properly speak and chew. Bridges also prevent remaining teeth from shifting and can maintain the shape of your face.

Types of bridges

There are several types of bridges available, and your dentist will select the right option for you:

  • Traditional bridges. This is the most popular kind of bridge that consists of one or more false teeth, also called pontics. It is held in place by dental crowns that are cemented onto the adjacent teeth. Traditional bridges are used when you have natural teeth on both sides of a gap and are strong enough to replace molars.
  • Cantilever bridges. These are similar to traditional bridges, but the false tooth is supported on only one side by an adjacent tooth instead of both sides. This bridge is ideal for patients with only one natural tooth beside the gap.
  • Maryland bridges. These bridges consist of a false tooth that is held in place by metal or porcelain framework. This framework is bonded to the backs of two adjacent teeth and isn’t held in place by crowns; therefore adjacent teeth don’t need to be filed. This is a conservative alternative to traditional bridges, and its strength is limited by the strength of the resin that holds it in place.

If you are looking for a tooth replacement option that does not require the use of crowns or resin, a dental implant may be the perfect solution in North Las Vegas, NV. Visit our dental implant page to learn more.
