What is bonding?
If a tooth is decayed, chipped, fractured, or discolored, it can be repaired with bonding. This tooth-colored composite resin can be shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. It’s one of the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedures. It can also be used to close spaces between teeth or to change a tooth’s shape or color.
No preparation is needed, and anesthesia isn’t necessary unless the bond is being used to fill a decayed tooth. If this is the case, we will discuss anesthesia options with you.
Dental bonding process
We will use a shade guide to determine the right color for the composite resin. He will slightly etch the surface of the tooth to roughen it and coat the tooth with a conditioning liquid. The resin will be applied and molded until it reaches the desired shape. Then, the material is hardened with ultraviolet light. After it hardens, we will trim and shape the bond as needed before polishing it to match the sheen of your other teeth.
This process takes about one hour to complete. Multiple appointments may be required if you need bonding on multiple teeth. To prevent stains, it’s important that you avoid tea, coffee, cigarette smoke, and other staining substances for 48 hours after treatment.
