Teeth whitening

Professional teeth whitening

If your teeth are in good shape but you’re unhappy with your smile, whitening is a great option to consider. Professional teeth whitening is a fast and effective procedure that gives you a radiant smile in no time. You can visit our office for treatment or receive kits to use in the comfort of your own home. Teeth whitening lightens the teeth and removes stains and discoloration. Treatment will need to be repeated to maintain a bright white color.

The color of your teeth is created by the reflection and scattering of light off the enamel, combined with the color of dentin under it. Thinner enamel allows more of the dentin color to show, and the thickness of enamel depends on your genes. As we age, our enamel gets thinner and the dentin becomes darker, which can lead to dull or discolored teeth. Enamel also contains pores that can hold stains.

Causes for discoloration and stains:

  • Using tobacco
  • Drinking dark-colored liquids such as coffee, soda, tea, and red wine
  • Not taking good care of your teeth

Teeth whitening treatment

There are two types of whitening: vital whitening, which is done on teeth with live nerves, and non-vital whitening, which is done on a tooth that has had a root canal and no longer has a live nerve.

Most commonly, patients will visit our office and our specialist will apply a gel to your teeth. A specialized light activates the gel and allows faster bleaching. Treatment typically lasts 30 to 90 minutes, and the number of appointments needed will depend on the severity of your stains and how white you want your teeth to be.

If you opt for at-home treatment, we will take impressions of your teeth and make custom mouthpieces. You will fill each mouthpiece with whitening gel provided by our office and wear the mouthpiece for several hours every day.

You can purchase many whitening agents over-the-counter, but these products contain a weaker formula than the ones you can receive from a professional dentist. Having your teeth whitened professionally also ensures an even and thorough coat of the gel and optimal results.
