What are dentures?
Dentures are used to replace missing teeth and are removable, so you take them out when you eat or brush your teeth. They never feel exactly like natural teeth, but they can be made to feel comfortable and stay in place throughout your day-to-day activities. We can specially design the denture that you need for your smile. Dentures are made from various types of porcelain and resin, which are durable materials that often feel similar to natural teeth.
There are two types of dentures: full and partial. A full denture is an entire arch of artificial teeth, whereas a partial denture is only a few teeth beside each other that rest on metal framework attached to your natural teeth. Sometimes, a crown is placed over your natural teeth which serve as an anchor for the framework to better support the partial denture.
Partial Removable Dentures
If you still have some teeth remaining in a dental arch, you may not need a full set of dentures. We can attach the framework to your natural teeth that are near the space where teeth are missing. Then, a partial denture is attached to this framework and is cared for just like full dentures.
Benefits of Dentures
A piece of your identity may feel as though it is missing when a part of your smile is also missing. Dentures are an option for patients looking to restore their smile and confidence with a full mouth of teeth. Dentures can:
- Support facial muscles and prevent sagging
- Help you eat and speak comfortably
- Restore your confidence and smile
Caring for Dentures
Dentures need to be replaced over time due to natural wear and/or changes in your facial structure, which naturally occurs as you age. Dentures can become loose and slip around in your mouth, which makes it difficult to chew or speak. If you are in need of replacing or realigning your dentures, call our office for an appointment.
Here are some general tips for caring for your dentures:
- Handle them gently; dropping them could cause them to break
- Place them in a soaking solution when you’re not wearing them to avoid drying out
- Avoid hot water, as this could cause dentures to warp
- Brush them daily to remove food and plaque
- Brush your tongue and palate every morning and night; this stimulates circulation to your tissues and helps remove plaque while eliminating bad breath and germs
- Don’t try to fix dentures yourself; see a specialist if they are cracked, chipped, or loose
