Scaling and root planing

Treating Gum Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can be detrimental to your oral and overall health if left untreated or if the disease becomes severe enough. Gum disease can cause tooth decay and threatens the health of your gums, which can lead to other infections in your body.

  • Causes of periodontal disease include
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes
  • Family history/genetics
  • Poor nutrition

Luckily, this disease can be treated with tooth scaling and root planing, which are services that our team offers in our state-of-the-art office in North Las Vegas, NV.

The Scaling and Root Planing Process

This treatment can be performed in our dental office. Multiple appointments may be required depending on the severity of your condition. Typically, local anesthesia is used; however, we offer a variety of sedation options to ensure maximum comfort to our patients.

First, we will scrape the plaque from your teeth and clear out any large pockets that have developed between your teeth and gums. This is known as teeth scaling. Next, your doctor will smooth the roots of the affected teeth. Smooth root surfaces keep plaque, bacteria, and tartar from reattaching. This is known as root planing, and it allows your gums to heal and reattach themselves firmly and without the interruption of bacteria and infection.

After your treatment, we will follow-up to evaluate the healing of your gums and make sure that no further infection or decay has taken place. Successful scaling and planing result in gum tissue becoming firm and pink again, and bleeding of the gums is reduced as pockets get smaller.
